Self-driving technology is new and in full evolution. There are only few organizations in Belgium that have a lot of experience with autonomous shuttles. Thanks to the experience in the various pilot projects that were set up in Belgium, Vias had an important advisory role from the outset and proved to be the ideal, objective partner to discuss the state of affairs and differences in technology, feasibility of the project and points for attention. In addition, Vias has also facilitated contacts with the competent authorities so that the project could also be tested in accordance with the legal framework.

We wanted to analyze the possibilities of adapting an existing road infrastructure to make it perfectly safe to use by trucks with bulk loadings. The road investigated in this project goes through woods with a presence of sharp bends as well as streteches with a marked slope. We chose to work with Vias because it is an independent organization and its competence in the field essential to our project is recognized. The mission that we entrusted to Vias was to analyze in all objectivity whether the road we wanted to use for the passage of our trucks could or not be adapted to the traffic we were considering. We asked also for recommendations on the adjustments that should be made if necessary. The mission was carried out in accordance with our expectations and allowed us to this day to study in detail the arrangements that have been proposed. Shortly before the Mobility Week, we wanted to offer its employees a webinar on road safety. We went to the Vias which demonstrated professionalism and efficiency. In the context of a project carried out jointly by Brussels Airport Company and De Lijn to test an autonomous shuttle at Brussels Airport, Vias performed a traffic analysis of a critical roundabout along the intended shuttle route in the BruCargo area. Incoming vehicles and their speed were measured during a continuous period of two weeks. On top, two cameras filmed the roundabout during pre-defined peak-periods. Major traffic flows, critical points of congestion and safety risks were identified based on behavior analysis. This information is very useful for the preparation of the tests and forms a basis for comparison and assessment of the traffic impact of the shuttle during the tests. We enjoy a very professional collaboration with Vias and can count on their valuable support and advice throughout this project.
